Welcome to our Sheep Ranch!
A Most Remarkable Farm Animal
One of the most wondrous animals on the farm is one that was never truly born — the humble, unfertilized egg. Laid by a hen, it provides a hearty breakfast without harm to any creature.
Another marvel of the farm is the sheep — specifically, our Blackbelly sheep. Well-suited to California’s hot climate, Blackbelly sheep are more heat-tolerant than most breeds. They’re naturally resistant to parasites and disease, making them a healthy, low-maintenance option. Their droppings are small and scattered, much like a rabbit’s, keeping things tidy.
Blackbelly sheep are classified as "hair sheep," meaning they don’t grow wool but instead have coarse hair. In colder months, they develop a woolly undercoat that they shed naturally in the spring — no shearing required. Their skin contains less oil than other breeds, and their meat is known for its sweet, delicious flavor.
All in all, Blackbelly sheep are a clean, hardy, and sustainable choice for small farms or homesteads. They are not commonly farmed commercially due to their slow growth rate, but they make up for it with their lovable personalities and excellent stamina. These sheep can jump surprisingly high — especially when they’re slipping past you with the agility of a deer. While they tend to be shy around strangers, they’re playful with each other and fun to watch.
As a bonus, they help maintain the land by trimming trees and controlling weeds — a natural, four-legged landscaping crew.
